My sweet husband, John, and I were married for 46 years. Each Valentine’s Day, he’d send me the most beautiful flowers containing a note with five simple words: “My love for you grows.” Four children, 46 bouquets and a lifetime of love were his legacy to me when he passed away two years ago.
On my first Valentine’s Day alone, ten months after I lost him, I was shocked to receive a gorgeous bouquet addressed to me… from John. Angry and heartbroken, I called the florist to say there had been a mistake. The florist replied, “No, ma’am, it’s not a mistake. Before he passed away, your husband prepaid for many years and asked us to guarantee that you’d continue getting bouquets every Valentine’s Day.” With my heart in throat, I hung up and read the attached card. It said, “My love for you is eternal.”

Love is much more than a bouquet of flowers on Valentine’s Day, it is the care that is put into each thought, each word and each action you extend towards your loved ones. Let this story be a reminder that what is important is not the bouquet of flowers or the box of chocolates, it is the thought that went into the expression of love. In this case, this woman’s late husband’s expression of love is in his thoughtful gesture that his wife would continue to be comforted by and reminded of his love for her even long after he was gone. More importantly, he continued to do in death what he had done when he was alive—that was to show her that he loved her. Don’t wait for Valentine’s Day to be kind and caring towards your loved ones, do it now. Now is all we have.
